Getting a single line of text from your phone onto your computer is one of those tasks that has no clean answer. You can email it to yourself and then dig it back out of your inbox, paste it into a chat and open that chat app on the other device, or just read it off one screen and retype it on the other. For a Wi-Fi password, a two-factor code, or a long URL, every one of those is slower and more error-prone than it should be.
The browser-only way
FileTransferX has a Transfer Text tool that moves a short piece of text straight from one device to another. There is nothing to install on either end and no account to create.
- On the device that has the text, open filetransferx.com and choose Send Text.
- Type or paste the text you want to move into the box.
- A QR code and a short pairing code appear on screen.
- On the other device, open filetransferx.com and choose Receive Text.
- Scan the QR code with the camera, or type in the short pairing code by hand.
- The text appears on the second device the moment it is sent. Select it and copy it as normal.
The pairing code is good for that one exchange only, so nothing stays linked afterward and there is no history to clear.
Why this beats emailing or messaging yourself
An email or a chat message leaves a permanent copy of whatever you sent — often a password or a verification code — sitting in an account that syncs to every device you own. A direct device-to-device transfer has no copy to leave behind: the text moves straight between the two tabs, is never written to a server, and is gone once you close the tab.
It is also just faster. There is no inbox to refresh and no app to switch to on the receiving device — the text is on screen the instant it is sent.
It works in both directions
The same steps run the other way without any change. Choose Send Text on your computer and Receive Text on your phone to push a link or a snippet from the big screen to the small one. The pairing method — QR code or short code — is identical either way, so there is only one workflow to remember.
When you need to move a file instead
Transfer Text is built for things you would rather type once than twice. If what you need on the other device is a photo, a video, or a document, use the file transfer tool instead — it pairs the same way but is made for files rather than plain text.
