How to Share Files Between Devices on the Same Wi-Fi Network

August 19, 2026

If two devices are already on the same Wi-Fi network — say, a laptop and a phone at home, or two computers on an office network — moving a file between them should be one of the simplest tasks there is. In practice it’s often not, because most transfer tools route the file out to the internet and back even when the two devices are a few feet apart.

Transferring on the same network

FileTransferX doesn’t need the two devices to be on the same network, but when they are, pairing and transferring both tend to be especially quick.

  1. On the device with the file, open filetransferx.com and choose Send Files.
  2. Select the file, or files, to send.
  3. On the second device, open filetransferx.com and choose Receive Files.
  4. Scan the QR code, or type the short transfer code shown on the sending device.
  5. Accept the incoming files to start the transfer.

There’s no need to check that both devices support the same file-sharing standard, no shared folder to set up, and no permissions to configure — pairing with a code handles all of it.

Good for offices, classrooms, and shared spaces

This is a common scenario in shared workspaces: handing a presentation file to someone else’s laptop before a meeting, or moving a document to a printer’s connected computer. A short transfer code is faster to communicate out loud or hold up on a screen than asking someone for their email address or setting up a shared drive.

It still works across different networks

None of this requires being on the same Wi-Fi — it just tends to be a good fit for it. The same steps work identically when the two devices are on completely different networks in different locations.
